City and Guilds New Roads and Street Works (NRSWA)

Operatives & Supervisors

This assessment is designed to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform operative/supervisor duties to the City & Guilds standards set in line with the NRSW Act 1991. The course is suitable for those who are already employed in the highways maintenance and utilities sector, and have experience in carrying out excavation and reinstatement work and require their SWQR (Street Works Qualification Register) Card.

Course Content Operatives:

  • Unit 1 – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus

  • Unit 2 – Signing, lighting and guarding

  • Unit 3 – Excavation in the highway

  • Unit 4 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill material

  • Unit 5 – Reinstatement of sub-base and base (road base) in non-bituminous materials)

  • Unit 6 – Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials

  • Unit 9 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways

Additional Units:

  • Unit 7 – Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials

  • Unit 8 – Reinstatement of concrete slabs

An additional day of training is required for the above two additional units.

On successful completion of the course delegates will receive their City & Guilds certification, and an SWQR Card which is valid for 5 years. To renew their card, delegates will be required to complete a NRSWA Refresher course.

  • Unit 11 – Monitoring excavation in the highway

  • Unit 12 – Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill material

  • Unit 13 – Monitoring reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials

  • Unit 14 – Monitoring reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials

  • Unit 16 – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
